Andrew Smith
Andrew Smith worked at Kingston University in Surrey, England for many years as School of Music Technical Director. In this time he dealt with all the technical needs of the music school. His vast experience and knowledge gained in recording the many hundreds of music projects that came through the University. Such as The Kingston University Big Band (that he initiated), the Chinese Music Ensemble, Choirs, Orchestras, Gamelan, Djmebe groups, Electro-Acousitc concerts, Indian Classical Music, & Contemporary Western Music Ensembles.
Andrew initiated and managed the prestigious Gateway Studio’s collaboration with Kingston University, during which time included projects for ECM Records (with Evan Parker), “Jazz on 3″ BBC3 Radio program, & numerous commercial recordings from John Law to Billy Bragg.
He also had a live sound mobile mixing & recording unit and recorded at The Royal Albert Hall, St John’s Smith Square, The Bull’s Head, jazz club in Barnes, & many other venue around London. Andrew has worked with The Glamorgan Jazz Summer School, Roujan Jazz Summer School, and many other music education events and concerts.
This experience has afforded him a unique position of having mixed or recorded an exceptionally wide range of instruments and live sound recording contexts. Many of his students are now working successfully in all areas of The British Music Industry.
Andrew moved to Vancouver in 2005 since then he set up Vancouver Live Sound and has worked at the Vancouver Jazz Festival, Vancouver Folk Festival, Music in the Morning, Heart of the City Festival, Talking Stick, Baobab African Festival, Sisterhood Festival, Moon Festival, and productions by Vancouver Moving Theatre & Black Bird Theatre Company.
As well as The Turning Point Ensemble, The Soujourners, Denzal Sinclaire & Bill Coon, Mark Berube, C.R. Avery, Dan Mangan, Coco Love Alcorn, Kevin Finseth, Paul Pigat, Peggy Lee band, Van Django, Mae Moore, The Breakmen, Red Grass, Alpha Yaya Diallo, Diane Barabarash, Amos Garrett, Doug Cox, Kate Reid, Foy Vance, Dick Gaughan, James Keelahaghan, Tony McManus, Ralph Shaw, Dawn Pemberton, Roy Bookbinder, The Shirleys, Tim Gerwing, Petunia & The Vipers, and many more.
Andrew has worked at: Performance Works, The Centre for Performing Arts, The Cultch, Christchurch Cathedral, The Academy of Music, The Roundhouse, Dr Sun Yat-Sen Gardens, The Wise Hall, The Rime, The Irish Room at The Olympics, and many other venues around Vancouver.
In a short time in Vancouver Andrew has established himself as a sound engineer you can rely on for empathy, great sound and a calm presence for both live sound mixing and recording.
